Why Being 'Au Naturel' Is Best for Your PCOS

Did you know, that between five-ten percent of women between the ages of 15 and 44 or during the years they can have children have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)? According to Women’s Health, most women find out they have PCOS in their 20’s and 30’s when they have problems getting pregnant and see their doctor.

Sam Shohet, a Holistic Therapist who runs the Integral Health alternative health practice in London’s Harley Street, believes in the best of health, ‘naturally’. He sees a wide range of patients everyday helping them relieve their symptoms of PCOS, he has an initial background in medical education and hands-on clinical experience.

"Conventional medicine is failing when it comes to treating women with the condition."

Shohet believes that conventional medicine is failing when it comes to treating women with the condition, it became his desire to find better and more specific, natural ways to find treatments.

The holistic therapist makes sure his treatments are designed around each person’s unique genetic makeup, “each person needs to be treated differently, as not everyone's the same.”

Shohet has a variety of methods in treating his patients, one in particular is a hair test and the use of muscle testing. He uses these methods in conjunction with conventional medicine, genes and gene expression. “I take into consideration the factors that affect gene expression such as diet,” Shohet explained. He uses these methods and considers all factors such as diet and toxins to diagnose his patients effectively.

The hair test helps him to analyse his patients genetics and find out their diet, lifestyle and environments such as toxins. For example, chemicals and radiation affect the outcome of your genetic makeup, and what he is looking for is genetic expression amongst his patients, which is what makes everyone different.

Shohet claims, “your genes have to deal with everything that is thrown at them, diet, lifestyle, environment, and emotions.”

When it comes to your diet, Shohet states that it comes down to specific blood types, “if somebody is a blood type O, they cannot tolerate grains,” whereas “Blood Type A are lactose intolerant.” The first step in treating your PCOS is doing a hair test, once you get your results, you can cut out certain elements of food in your diet that may be causing you harm depending on your blood type.

Shohet started his career in holistic therapy because he has, “always been fascinated by acupuncture and Chinese medicine."

"You're not treating a condition, you are treating a human being."

“If you go to a GP the first thing he is going to reach out for is a treatment, he is not going to worry about what is wrong with you. You're not treating a condition, you are treating a human being.” Shohet claims that, “conventional medicine does not have the time to teach their students what I have taken over 20 years to learn.”

By using conventional medicine alone to try and treat PCOS he explains, “you are changing how the body works, so you’re going against natural gene expression.”

According to Shohet, people who take the contraceptive pill for PCOS are unaware of the consequences. Shohet told us that it has been known that the pill can worsen symptoms or have side effects rather than making PCOS better.

21-year-old student journalist, Gabriella Ferlita from Woking, has been a patient at Integral Health since July 2020. She saw Shohet to relieve her symptoms of PCOS after suffering from symptoms of the condition for years. Ferlita experienced 7 years of symptoms before being diagnosed with PCOS and was shocked to find out it is a lifelong condition.

Before seeing Shohet to treat her condition she was on the progesterone-only pill, which she believed made her undiagnosed condition at the time much worse. The side effects were absent periods and agonising pain, weight gain, depression, and low libido.

"I didn't want to touch hormonal contraception ever again."

She claimed, “I didn’t want to touch hormonal contraception ever again.”

“By the time I went on the pill I was a size 12 and I was having to wax my face every single week, I was just miserable. There would be some days where I wouldn’t want to leave the house.”

“Doctors these days have one size, fits all mentality, or worse they dismiss your symptoms completely,” said Ferlita.

Ferlita decided to take on a more natural route and she went to see Shohet. After completing a hair test, Shohet advised her on what vitamins and supplements to take and how to adapt her diet.

“One week after starting his program I got my period, something I had not had for months. I've seen a huge difference in my weight, bloating and pain, I have increased energy and reduced facial hair.”

There are clearly many positive side effects to Shohet’s methods, proven by Ferlita’s treatment. If you are suffering from PCOS why not try a natural approach yourself?
