The term “Obeah” stems from a kind of sorcery practiced in the Caribbean, which allegedly means “he knows the value of my power.”

"There is a significant theme to all of Mighty’s latest songs, which promote self-confidence and power."

There is a significant theme to all of Mighty’s latest songs, which promote self-confidence and power. Her latest single “Antisocial”, incorporates elements of power, self-love and confidence.

The single could not have come at a more perfect time. 2020 and this year so far have been lessons for us to learn to be by ourselves and to reflect on who we are as people, but also to learn the power we have as individuals to be our best.

This will be her fourth single to be released since her breakthrough award-winning album which was released in 2019 named “13th”, produced by Mighty and Musical Artist Devontee. The project won her the honour of being the first Hip Hop artist as well as the first Black womxn to win the Polaris Music Prize.

The album was described by Mighty in Pitchfork as an, “unflinching examination of North America’s history of slavery while acknowledging the continuing struggle for equality.”

You could say her next single “Obeah” focuses more on her being an independent woman in power of her own life and her own successes so far.

“Obeah” is a collaboration with producer Mighty Prynce, that promotes and focuses on emotions of self-confidence and how we feel within ourselves, but also on how we validate ourselves.

The release of her breakthrough album “13th” in 2019, features elements of rap, hip hop, Caribbean rhythms, frenetic electro and diverse instrumentation to tackle racism head-on.

Mighty’s work ethic has not slowed down or stopped, even through the chaotic year that was 2020. Mighty is thriving in lockdown, focusing on herself whilst creating lots of content which can be seen as inspiring. Mighty describes the enforced solitude of lockdown as not an obstacle, but “a window of immense opportunity”.

As the year continues Mighty has plans to carve out spaces that boldly defy gendered expectations for women in Hip Hop.
